Run-Through Of Plateau State
Plateau State is known for its stunning landscapes, particularly the Jos Plateau, which is located in its central and northern regions. The State has witnessed numerous changes to its borders over the years.
These changes were influenced by colonial interests, primarily the need to safeguard railway construction and ensure the safe transportation of tin mining in the region to the coast.
Additionally, there was an early attempt to create a province with a mostly non-Muslim population under a single Resident. The following alterations were driven by local aspirations for self-governance.
During the early 20th century, as the British wielded colonial control over Nigeria, much of what is now Plateau State was part of the Bauchi Province.
However, in 1926, Plateau Province emerged, comprising Jos and Pankshin Divisions. Border modifications followed, intending to avoid the division of ethnic groups. In May 1967, the Benue and Plateau Provinces joined to create Benue-Plateau State when Nigeria had twelve states.
After the civil war, Benue-Plateau State, along with other large states, underwent further division under General Yakubu Gowon’s military administration in 1976.

Plateau State was then created from Benue-Plateau, covering the area of the original Plateau Province. In 1996, Plateau State experienced additional subdivision to form Nasarawa State, which was carved out of its western half.
Plateau State is home to over forty ethno-linguistic groups, especially farmers with shared cultural and traditional practices.
While each group has its typical language, English is the official language, and Hausa is a common way of communication, aligning with the broader cultural context of the North and Middle regions of Nigeria.
