Run-Through Of Enugu State
Enugu State, also known as ‘Ȯra Enugu’ in the Igbo language, is one of the 36 states in Nigeria, discovered in the southeastern part of the country.
It’s covered by other states: Benue and Kogi to the north, Ebonyi to the east and southeast, Abia to the south, and Anambra to the west.
Enugu used to be called ‘Enugwu-Ngwo’ but was renamed to ‘Enugu’ in 1928 due to its growth. Enugu State is the 29th largest state in Nigeria and has a population of over 4.4 million as of 2016.
It has different landscapes, with swampy forests in the south and drier forest-savanna areas in the rest of the state. Notable geographical features include the Udi-Nsukka Plateau and the Ekulu River.
Many different ethnic groups live in Enugu State, with the majority being the Igbo people, along with smaller communities of Idoma and Igala peoples. Before British colonial rule, this region was a piece of the Kingdom of Nri and later the Aro Confederacy.
In the past, Enugu played an important role in Nigeria’s history, particularly during the time of anti-colonial resistance, marked by the 1949 Iva Valley coal miners’ massacre.
After Nigeria gained independence in 1960, Enugu was part of the Eastern Region until the Nigerian Civil War in 1967 when it became the region of the secessionist state of Biafra.
However, federal forces seized Enugu, and the state was reunified with Nigeria. Enugu State is mostly rural and known for agriculture, with many people engaged in farming.
In urban areas, trading is common, and there are vibrant markets like the Ogbete Main Market. The state also had a history of coal mining around the city of Enugu.
Overall, Enugu State is known for its rich culture, primarily as the heart of Igboland, which is the cultural region of the Igbo people in Nigeria.
