Let’s learn.
Run-Through Of Ekiti State
The state was formed in 1996 when it was divided from Ondo State, and its capital is a city called Ado-Ekiti. Even though it’s one of the most undersized states in Nigeria, Ekiti is still large, ranking 31st in size.
About 3.3 million people lived there in 2016, which makes it the 30th most populated state in Nigeria. Most of the State is covered in forests, but in the northern region, it’s a bit drier with a mix of forests and savanna-like areas.
You can find all sorts of interesting animals there, like monkeys, buffalo, and even chimpanzees in the Ise Forest Reserve. In March 2022, Ekiti State became the first place in Nigeria to choose an official state tree.
They picked the Obeche tree because it’s important to the environment, the economy, and the culture. People have been living in Ekiti for a very long time.
Most of the residents there are from the Ekiti group, which is part of the larger Yoruba community. Let me tell you this; Before the British came, Ekiti was ruled by different groups, like the Oyo Empire and the Benin Empire.
Later, the Ekiti states joined together in what they called the Ekiti Confederacy in the 1800s. They even fought a war called the Kiriji War, but it ended in a kind of tie due to the British.

After all that, Ekiti became part of British Nigeria in 1914. It was a part of the Western Region after Nigeria got its independence in 1960. Then in 1976, Ekiti got its own identity as a state.
A long time ago, before the British came, Ekiti was its independent state. People there are part of the Yoruba group, just like many other places in Nigeria. Now, there are two ways people think about how Ekiti came to be.
First, some say Ekiti’s history goes back to Ile Ife. They say a guy named Olofin, who was one of Oduduwa’s kids went on a journey with his 16 children.
Along the way, they stopped in different places, and some of them stayed in spots near Ekiti, while others went further and settled in what’s now Ekiti.
They saw lots of hills there, so they called it “Ile olokiti,” which means the land of hills. Over time, it became Ekiti.
But this story mostly talks about the history of royal families in Ekiti, and not everyone in Ekiti is part of a royal family.
Many people who came later mixed with the locals and changed the language. However, some say that Oduduwa, the Yoruba ancestor, came to Ife.
When he got there, some residents were already living there. Some of the people he met in Ife later settled in Ekiti.
