Run-Through Of Borno State
Borno State is situated in the northeastern part of Nigeria, and it is surrounded by other Nigerian states like Yobe and Adamawa.
This state shares its borders with three other countries, Cameroon, Niger, and Chad. The name “Borno” comes from the old emirate of Borno, and its main city, Maiduguri, is the capital of the state.
Borno State officially became a state in 1976 when the North-Eastern State was divided into smaller parts. Yobe State, one of its neighbors, was also created at that time.
Now, when you look at Borno State on a map, you’ll notice it’s oversized, it’s the second-largest state in Nigeria after Niger State.
But despite its size, it’s not one of the most populated states. In 2016, it had around 5.86 million people living there. However, Borno State has different geographies.
In the north, it’s kind of dry and desert-like, while in the center and south, you’ll find more grassy areas. There’s even a part called the Mandara Plateau in the southeast, which is like a hilly area. In the far northeast, you’ll see a piece of Lake Chad, a big lake shared with neighboring countries.
Speaking of wildlife, Borno State used to be home to various animals like elephants, cranes, hyenas, and more, but some of them had to leave because of the Boko Haram conflict. Recently, though, elephants returned to the state, which was exciting news.

People living in Borno State come from different ethnic groups, like the Kanuri and Shuwa Arabs in the north and central parts, and the Waja, Afade, and others in different areas.
Most of them are Muslims, but there are also Christians and traditional believers. Borno State has a long history, going back to the days of empires like Kanem and Bornu.
It had its share of wars and changes, including times when it was under colonial rule by countries like Germany and Britain. In modern times, Borno State has faced challenges, especially with the rise of Boko Haram.
This group caused a lot of problems, and for a while, they controlled parts of the state. But with the efforts of many, including soldiers from different countries, they were pushed back into the Sambisa Forest.
The state’s economy used to rely a lot on farming and raising animals, but the conflict disrupted all of that. However, there’s hope for development and improvement as the situation becomes a bit more stable.
